PLAY – NOVEL
:
AT THE POST OFFICE – A PLAY
KARIM : Please will you tell me if this letter is all right .
Last time I sent a letter to Salim he had to pay a lot of money on
it, and he was angry with me .
THE POST_ OFFICE CLERK. I’ll weigh it for you . Let’s see if
the weigh is all right. No; it’s too heavy.
You’ll have to put two more stamps on it. . . . I can fell some
round things inside ; what are they ?
KARIM : Money.
THE CLERK : If you put money or anything of real value in a
letter you must register the letter
KARIM : What does ”register ” mean ?
THE CLERK : It means that you must seal the letter with wax on
the back so as to be sure that no one opens the letter, and you
must put on more stamps, so that it may go in a sealed bag with
all the other valuable letters.
KARIM : Is there a law that people must not put money in letters?
Is it un_ lawful ?
THE CLERK : No; it isn’t a law . There is a law which set up Post
Office. And that law gave the men in the Post Office the right to
make rules; one of the rules says that you must not put money
in un_ registered letters. There are many other rules.
THE CLERK : The rules are means to make the work easy for the
men who deal with the letters, so that you may receive your
letters quickly . There are also rules to stop you from sending
letters or packages which spoil other people’s letters . I’d like to
show you some of the foolish things people do !
KARIM : P lease show them .
THE CLERK : Come with me .
( They go into the room behind the Post Office . )
THE CLERK : Now, what’s wrong with this letter ?
KARIM : There’s no name on it ! Where is it meant to go ?
THE CLERK : He hasn’t written the address . He won’t get a
reply to that letter ! We’ll have to open it and send it back .
KARIM : And he has put the stamp on upside down !
THE CLERK : There’s no rule against that ; but you must put on
enough stamps . This letter is marked ” Air Mail ” ; but he hasn’t
put on enough stamps for it to go by air . Now look at this
great big wooden box.
KARIM : It’s very big !
THE CLERK : Yes, this package is too big. Let’s measure it
. It measures over three feet in length.
The postman can’t carry a box as big as that ; it must go by train
. Now look at this dirty paper parcel; there’s some liquid
coming out of it which will spoil other parcels or letters.
KARIM : It’s oil . There’s a bottle of hair_ oil in it and the bottle
is broken.
THE CLERK : Of course it is broken, because it’s so badly
packed. Now look at this box ; it is full of wet sugar or some
sugary stuff, and the stuff is running out. It will spoil all the other
packages and make them dirty.
KARIM : What’s wrong with this parcel ? It’s well packed :
there’s a hole at one end, but it’s only a little hole.
THE CLERK :Look inside!
KARIM : Oh, fireworks ! I love fireworks.
THE CLERK : You must not send any explosive by post.
You mustn’t put anything in a parcel which may explode or
catch fire easily . Think how dangerous that would be ! All the
letters would be burnt. If people don’t keep the rules they spoil
other people’s letters and make our work harder.
KARIM : This is a nice parcel . It is well packed . I looks like a
box of sweets . I don’t see anything wrong with it .
THE CLERK : Look at the name and address. Who is it meant
for ?
KARIM : I’s for me! A box of sweets from my grand_ mother
!
